Bakuchiol and Magnesium: How REJUVENATE Works on Firmness

Bakuchiol prompts collagen production the way retinol does, through a different pathway and without the peeling or sun sensitivity. Magnesium supports the cellular processes that build new skin cells and helps the barrier hold water. Together they're the working pair in REJUVENATE, which reduces cellular aging by 69.5%.

What is bakuchiol?

A compound from the leaves and seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant with a long history of use in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.

Its relevance now is that it activates gene expression of type I collagen and procollagen, the proteins that give skin its structure. Research suggests bakuchiol increases collagen production by up to 21% in four weeks.

What makes it interesting isn't that it outperforms retinol. It's that it reaches a similar result through a different route, without retinol's peeling, stinging and sun sensitivity. For anyone whose skin has become less tolerant with age, that difference decides whether a product gets used at all. We've put the two side by side here.

It also carries antioxidant activity. Free radicals degrade collagen and elastin, and neutralising some of them is a second, quieter contribution to the same outcome.

Why magnesium is in a firming serum

Because skin cells need it to function, not because it sounded good on a label.

Magnesium is involved in DNA and RNA synthesis, the processes that govern how cells divide and grow. Adequate magnesium supports skin cells forming correctly and renewing at a sensible rate, which is the foundation everything else sits on.

It also supports barrier function, which is what keeps water in and irritants out. A barrier that holds water is a barrier that doesn't leave skin dry, itchy or reactive, and after 40 that becomes harder to maintain. Our piece on what your skin barrier does all day explains the mechanism.

And it plays a role in regulating inflammation, which matters here because chronic inflammation accelerates collagen breakdown. In REJUVENATE it appears as Magnesium Chloride.

Why the two work better together

Bakuchiol drives collagen production. Magnesium supports the cellular machinery that has to carry out the instruction.

An active that signals for more collagen needs skin capable of responding to the signal. On a compromised barrier with poor cell function, the message arrives and nothing much happens. That's why REJUVENATE also carries multi weight hyaluronic acid, which holds water at more than one depth, and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 as a second collagen signal.

It's the same logic behind every formula we make. No ingredient is in there alone, and none of them is expected to do the job by itself.

How to use it

Two to three drops after cleansing and after MERACLE, morning and evening. Press it in until it absorbs before your moisturiser goes on.

Bakuchiol doesn't bring retinol's sun sensitivity, so it suits both ends of the day. Wear sunscreen regardless, because UV damages collagen faster than any serum rebuilds it.

Give it twelve weeks before you judge it. Firmness is structural rather than superficial, which makes it slower than pigment and quieter when it arrives. Our guide to what to expect in your first 12 weeks sets out what happens when.

Questions we get asked

Is bakuchiol as strong as retinol? It reaches a similar outcome through a different pathway. The more useful question is which one your skin will tolerate for twelve weeks, because an active you abandon in week two does nothing at all.

Can I use it with vitamin C? Yes. They work on different things and don't compete. Many people use ILLUMINATE and REJUVENATE together, thinner formula first.

Will it irritate sensitive skin? It's considerably gentler than retinol, though nothing is universally tolerated. Both our serums contain lavender oil and elemi oil at low levels, so patch test if essential oils have caused you trouble before.

Is it safe in pregnancy? REJUVENATE is formulated to be pregnancy and nursing safe. Check with your doctor before starting anything new in pregnancy regardless.

Do I need magnesium in my diet too? It won't hurt, and it does different work. Topical magnesium acts on the skin. Dietary magnesium supports the whole system, including sleep, which is when collagen synthesis happens.

Should I use it morning or evening? Either, or both. Unlike retinol, there's no reason to confine it to the evening.

Where to go from here

If retinol has defeated you before, this is the route that usually works instead. If you've never tried either, this is the easier place to start.

And if you're not sure whether firmness or pigment is the thing to treat first, our serum comparison settles it in about three minutes.
