Four questions separate an ingredient that works from one that markets well: is the concentration named, which form of the active is it, where does it sit in the ingredient list, and did anyone measure a result. Almost everything else on a box is decoration. This page explains what the main skincare actives actually do and links to the detail on each.
How to judge any ingredient
Start with concentration. "Contains niacinamide" and "niacinamide at 5%" are different statements, and only one can be checked against research.
Then the form. This matters more than most people realise, because the same nominal ingredient can behave completely differently depending on how it is delivered. Vitamin C is the clearest example and we come to it below.
Then position. Ingredients are listed by descending quantity down to 1%, so an active named on the front of the box that appears after the preservatives at the back is present in trace amounts.
Then evidence. Not "clinically tested", which can mean a tolerance patch test, but a number someone is willing to stand behind. Our piece on what makes a serum clinical grade works through all four properly.
The brightening actives
Three ingredients dominate this category and they interrupt pigmentation at different points, which is why combining them beats choosing between them.
Alpha Arbutin inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces melanin. It stops new pigment forming, which makes it preventive rather than corrective, and it is gentle enough for long term use where hydroquinone is not.
Niacinamide works further along the chain, blocking melanin already made from transferring into surface cells. It also supports the barrier and helps regulate oil, which makes it the most useful multitasker in common use.
Vitamin C does some of both and adds antioxidant protection and collagen support.

Why the form of vitamin C matters more than the percentage
L Ascorbic Acid is the pure form and the most researched. It also needs a pH below 3.5 to work, which is why it stings, and it oxidises on contact with water, heat and air.
In an equatorial climate that happens faster than most people expect. A serum that has turned amber has largely stopped working, whatever the percentage on the label said when you bought it.
Stable derivatives solve the problem. Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate holds its potency at skin friendly pH and works at lower concentrations, which is why we use it. Our comparison of the two forms has the chemistry, and it is the single most climate specific formulation decision we have made.
The firming actives
Collagen is the target and there are only a few credible routes to it.
Retinoids bind to receptors in skin cells and switch on the genes driving collagen synthesis. They work, and tolerance often falls at exactly the age people reach for them.

Peptides act as messengers telling cells to produce more collagen. They work gradually rather than dramatically, which is the honest description of most things that work.

The hydration actives
Hyaluronic acid is the default and it is not the only option.
Multi weight hyaluronic acid holds water at more than one depth, which is a meaningful improvement on the single weight version. Snow mushroom polysaccharides are smaller molecules again and carry water deeper still. Our comparison of the two covers where each earns its place.
In a humid climate this matters more than it sounds, because humid air does not hydrate skin and air conditioning actively dehydrates it. Skincare in Singapore's humidity goes through that properly.
Marine and biotic actives
Two categories that have moved from novelty to mainstream, with uneven evidence behind them.
Marine actives, meaning red algae, oarweed and deep sea water, deliver minerals, antioxidants and polysaccharides. Some of the claims made for them are well supported and some are not, and our guide to marine actives separates the two.
Biotics are the more interesting category. Prebiotics feed the beneficial bacteria already on your skin, postbiotics deliver the compounds those bacteria produce, and probiotics are live bacteria that are difficult to keep stable in a bottle. Natural or synthetic: the wrong question
Natural is not automatically gentler and synthetic is not automatically stronger. Essential oils are entirely natural and a common trigger. Some synthetics are purer, more stable and better tolerated than the plant they replaced.
The useful question is what a specific ingredient does at a specific concentration in a specific formula. Our piece on plant derived and synthetic actives makes that argument at length.
We formulate with plant derived actives because of how they behave on skin and because they are harder to work with in ways that tend to produce better formulas. That is a formulation position rather than a claim about safety, and we would rather be clear about which is which.
What we publish and what we do not use
Every Byra formula is reviewed by EWG scientists and published in full on their database, which is not a site we control. Byra is the only skincare brand in Singapore with EWG Verified status.
We formulate without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, mineral oils, silicones, drying alcohols and hydroquinone.
PURIFY, ILLUMINATE and REJUVENATE do contain naturally derived essential oils at low levels. We say so plainly, because natural and gentle are not the same word, and anyone who has reacted to essential oils before deserves to know before they buy rather than after.
Questions we get asked
Which ingredient should I start with? The one matching the concern that bothers you most. Pigment responds faster than firmness, so brightening is the more common starting point. Our serum comparison works through that choice.
Can I use vitamin C and niacinamide together? Yes. The warning comes from a reaction observed under high heat in laboratory conditions that do not describe your face or any finished product.
Is a higher percentage better? No. Above the concentration used in the research, most actives add irritation rather than result.
How many actives can I use at once? Fewer than you think, and introduced one at a time with two weeks between. Which products suit your skin type covers the pace to build at.
How long before an active shows results? Comfort changes within a fortnight, pigment by 6 to 8 weeks with best results at 12, and firmness later still.
Does a humid climate change which ingredients work? It changes which ones survive in the bottle. Stability matters more here than anywhere else.
Where to go from here

If it clears all four, keep using it. If it clears none, that explains more than any new purchase would.
