Which Byra Products Suit Your Skin Type?

Your concern decides which serum. Your skin type decides how fast you build up to it. Oily and combination skin can usually start with a full routine straight away. Dry skin should lead with hydration. Reactive skin should start with one product and add slowly. Nobody needs to start with everything.

Start here

Skin type Start with What to watch
Oily or combination Cleanser and serum together Texture rather than richness
Dry or dehydrated Essence and moisturiser first, serum second Comfort within the first 2 weeks
Reactive or easily irritated One product, two weeks, then add Essential oils in the serums
Mature, losing firmness Serum first, support around it later Judging results too early

Oily and combination skin

Lightweight formulas matter more than gentle ones here.

Oily skin usually tolerates actives well, so you don't need to build up slowly. What you do need is texture that absorbs rather than sitting on the surface, which is a formulation question rather than a strength question. Our serums are water based, so they layer without adding weight.

Uneven tone and post acne marks come up disproportionately in oilier skin, which makes ILLUMINATE the usual starting point. It reduces melanin production by 25%, and it works on marks left behind by breakouts as well as on sun damage.

Start with PURIFY and ILLUMINATE. Add MERACLE when you want the serum working harder, since its gentle AHA and BHA complex also helps with congestion and pore appearance.

Dry and dehydrated skin

Fix the water first, then treat.

Dry skin often reads as dull, lined and reactive when the underlying problem is hydration rather than any of those things. Address that and a lot of what bothered you improves on its own, usually faster than pigment or firmness will.

Lead with MERACLE and SATURATE. SATURATE holds hydration for over 6 hours using snow mushroom polysaccharides, which carry water deeper into skin than hyaluronic acid manages. We've explained why that difference matters if you want the mechanism.

Add a serum once your skin feels comfortable, which is usually inside 2 weeks. REJUVENATE suits dry mature skin particularly well, since its multi weight hyaluronic acid holds water at more than one depth.

Reactive and easily irritated skin

Start with one thing. Give it two weeks. Then add the next.

Reactive skin has one requirement above all others: avoid what sets it off. That's usually synthetic fragrance, drying alcohols, certain preservatives and, for some people, essential oils. Our formulas are free of synthetic fragrance, parabens, drying alcohols and hydroquinone, and every ingredient sits on EWG's database where you can read it before you buy rather than after.

Be aware of one thing before you start. Both serums contain lavender oil and elemi oil at low levels. Natural and gentle are not the same word, and if essential oils have caused you problems in the past, patch test first. Our piece on what causes sensitive skin covers the usual culprits.

If your skin is in a reactive phase right now, start with PURIFY alone. A cleanser built on prebiotics and postbiotics supports the skin's own microbiome instead of stripping it, and the reasoning behind that is worth ten minutes. Once things settle, add one product at a time.

If you're pregnant or nursing, REJUVENATE is formulated to be safe for both. Ask us before you start anything new regardless, including ours.

Mature skin that's losing firmness

Buy the serum first and build the routine around it later.

Firmness is the slower project, so the sooner the treating step starts, the better. REJUVENATE reduces cellular aging by 69.5% and shows visible firmness improvement in 2 to 4 weeks in our clinical testing, with bakuchiol reaching collagen production without retinol's peeling or sun sensitivity. If you've abandoned retinol before, our bakuchiol comparison explains why this route often works where that one didn't.

Pigment and firmness both tend to show up after 40, which is the most common reason people can't choose. Our serum comparison works through that decision properly.

How to add actives without setting your skin off

Two weeks between additions. That's long enough to know what caused a reaction and short enough that you don't lose a season finding out.

Start with the cleanser and moisturiser, since neither is likely to cause trouble. Add the serum next, because it's the step carrying the result. Add the essence last. If something reacts, you'll know exactly which product did it, which you won't if you started everything on the same Monday.

Patch test on your inner forearm for three days before anything goes on your face, and order 3ml samples rather than full bottles if you're unsure. They're the real formula at full strength.

What skin type doesn't decide

Skin type tells you how to introduce products. It doesn't tell you which serum to buy.

That's a separate question, and the answer is whichever concern bothers you most. Dark spots point to ILLUMINATE, lost firmness points to REJUVENATE, and both together point to the Glow and Renewal Serum Combo. Someone with oily skin and pigmentation and someone with dry skin and pigmentation buy the same serum. They just get there at different speeds.

Questions we get asked

My skin is oily but also sensitive. Which section applies? The reactive one. Tolerance matters more than oil production when deciding how fast to build up.

Can I use both serums if my skin is reactive? Eventually, yes, but not at the start. Add one, give it two weeks, then consider the second.

Does combination skin need different products on different areas? Rarely, with formulas this lightweight. Most people do better with one routine used consistently than with two applied selectively.

How long before I know whether something suits me? Tolerance shows up within days. Results take longer. With ILLUMINATE, most people see meaningful brightening by 6 to 8 weeks, with best results at 12.

What if my skin type changes with the seasons? Adjust the moisturiser, not the serum. The treating step stays constant, which is what lets it accumulate.

Which trio suits which skin type? The Skin Brightening Trio is PURIFY, MERACLE and ILLUMINATE, which suits oily and combination skin with pigmentation. The Skin Firming Trio is MERACLE, REJUVENATE and SATURATE, which suits drier, less firm skin. The Complete Skin Transformation Set is everything, which suits someone confident their skin tolerates actives.

Where to go from here

Work out which of the four descriptions above sounds most like your skin on an ordinary day, not on its worst day. Then start with what that section suggests, and only that.

If you're between two of them, order samples and give yourself a fortnight. Your skin will tell you more in two weeks than any quiz will.
