ILLUMINATE or REJUVENATE: which Byra serum should you start with?

Both serums are EWG Verified and formulated in Sweden, and both are clinical grade concentrates. Choose ILLUMINATE if dark spots and uneven tone are what you notice first. Choose REJUVENATE if lost firmness and fine lines are what you notice first. Still stuck? Look at a recent photo of yourself and see which one you spot before the other.

What each serum is proven to do

ILLUMINATE REJUVENATE
Proven result Reduces melanin production by 25% Reduces cellular aging by 69.5%
Main actives Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide at 5%, Vitamin C as Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate Bakuchiol, multi weight Hyaluronic Acid, Magnesium
Works on Dark spots, post acne marks, sun damage, uneven tone Fine lines, loss of firmness, poor elasticity, dry mature skin

The two serums solve different problems, and the actives aren't interchangeable. ILLUMINATE works on pigment. Alpha Arbutin blocks melanin synthesis at the source, which is the same target hydroquinone hits, without hydroquinone. Niacinamide stops melanin already made from surfacing. The Vitamin C sits in there as Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a stable form that holds up better than L Ascorbic Acid in Singapore's humidity.

REJUVENATE works on structure. Bakuchiol prompts collagen production the way retinol does, through a different pathway, and it doesn't come with retinol's peeling or sun sensitivity. The Hyaluronic Acid is multi weight, so it holds water at more than one depth in the skin. Magnesium is in there because skin cells need it for cellular regeneration, not as a marketing flourish, and we've written about how bakuchiol and magnesium work together on firmness. If you're weighing bakuchiol against retinol specifically, we've put them side by side here.

Which one if you can only pick one

Pick for the concern that actually bothers you, not the one you feel you should be treating at your age.

Pigment is the more common answer here, and it's the one we'd usually point to. Dark spots read as older skin faster than a fine line does, and they respond faster to treatment. Collagen loss is the slower project. It matters more over ten years, but you will see less in the first three months.

Two exceptions. If your skin has gone crepey around the eyes and jaw and pigment isn't your issue, REJUVENATE is the obvious answer. And if retinol has failed you before, whether from peeling, redness or just giving up on it, REJUVENATE is where you'd start, because bakuchiol is the gentler route to the same collagen response.

If pigment and firmness bother you equally, the Glow and Renewal Serum Combo is both serums together.

Can you use both serums together

Yes. They're designed to work together, and we say so on both product pages.

Apply 2 to 3 drops after cleansing and after MERACLE Nutri Essence, morning and evening, pressing each one in until it absorbs before the next goes on. Both serums are water based, so neither blocks the other. ILLUMINATE needs SPF over the top during the day. Every brightening active is wasted under unprotected sun exposure.

How long before you see anything

With ILLUMINATE, most people see meaningful brightening by 6 to 8 weeks, with best results at 12.

That's a range rather than a date, and the reason is renewal speed. Pigment sits in cells that have to cycle out before you can see them go, and skin renews at different rates from one person to the next. Faster renewal, earlier result.

REJUVENATE shows something sooner. Visible improvement in firmness appears in 2 to 4 weeks in our clinical testing, while the collagen work underneath is the slower half. Twelve weeks is the fair point to judge either serum properly.

If you're four weeks in on pigment and seeing nothing, that's normal. If you're twelve weeks in and seeing nothing, tell us, because something in your routine is working against it and we'd rather find out what.

What is inside each formula

REJUVENATE. Water (Aqua), Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, Glycerin, Propanediol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hyaluronic Acid, Bakuchiol, Bisabolol, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Lysolecithin, Sclerotium Gum, Xanthan Gum, Pullulan, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, Aphanizomenon Flos-Aquae (Blue-Green Algae) Extract, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Superoxide Dismutase, Magnesium Chloride, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Canarium Luzonicum (Elemi) Gum Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Citric Acid, Leuconostoc / Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate, Sodium Phytate.

Worth knowing before you buy: both formulas contain lavender oil and elemi oil at low levels. If essential oils have irritated you before, that's the line to read twice.

Where these two sit in the rest of the routine

Neither serum is a routine on its own. Cleansing sits underneath both of them, and moisturiser sits over both.

PURIFY is the cleanser, built on prebiotics and postbiotics rather than on stripping the skin. MERACLE is the essence with a gentle AHA and BHA complex, and it increases how much of the serum your skin takes up by 25%. SATURATE is the moisturiser, holding hydration for over 6 hours, which is what the humidity here demands. That last one uses snow mushroom polysaccharides, which carry water deeper than hyaluronic acid does, and we've written about why that difference matters.

Sets do exist. The Skin Brightening Trio is PURIFY, MERACLE and ILLUMINATE. The Skin Firming Trio is MERACLE, REJUVENATE and SATURATE. The Complete Skin Transformation Set is the whole routine with both serums in it. A set is worth it when you want the serum supported rather than doing all the work alone. It's also more to commit to on a formula you haven't met yet.

Questions we get asked

Is one of them stronger than the other? No. They're both clinical grade concentrates. They aim at different targets, so "stronger" doesn't apply.

Retinol didn't work for me. Will bakuchiol? Often, yes. Bakuchiol reaches collagen production through a different pathway than retinol, and it doesn't carry the peeling or sun sensitivity that make people abandon retinol in week two. It's a genuine alternative rather than a diluted version.

Can I use REJUVENATE while pregnant or nursing? Yes. REJUVENATE is formulated to be pregnancy and nursing safe, fragrance free of synthetics, and free of hydroquinone, parabens and drying alcohols. Ask us before starting anything new in pregnancy regardless, including ours.

Which one should I use for melasma? Melasma behaves differently from ordinary dark spots and it's more stubborn. Read our guide to the difference first, then talk to us before you buy.

Do I need SPF with these? With ILLUMINATE, yes, every day, without exception. Bakuchiol in REJUVENATE doesn't bring the sun sensitivity retinol does, but sun exposure undoes brightening work faster than any serum can do it.

Can I try one before committing to a full bottle? Yes. Our 3ml samples are a true dose of the real formula, not a weaker version of it.

Where to go from here

Pick the concern you'd fix first if you could only fix one, and buy that serum. ILLUMINATE for brightening and dark spots. REJUVENATE for firming and fine lines.

Or don't buy anything yet. Order the samples, use them for two weeks, and see whether the texture suits you before you commit. We'd rather you were sure.
